Reading the Terms Behind an Offer: What to Check Before You Accept

A bonus banner shows you one number. The terms show you five more, and those five decide how much of the bonus you can ever take out. For a site that ranks casinos by payouts, that is the part worth reading slowly, on the page where you accept, not afterwards.
This guide goes through the terms in the order we read them: wagering, which games count and by how much, the time limit, the maximum bet while wagering is open, and what a cap on winnings does. It finishes with a few notes on checking everything on a phone, since that is where most people accept offers.
Start with the wagering requirement
Wagering, sometimes called playthrough, is the amount you must stake before bonus funds or the winnings from them can be withdrawn. It is stated as a multiple. The figure can apply to the bonus alone or to the bonus plus the deposit, and that difference is large. Find the sentence that says which.
Brand pages on this site note that some of the seven brands in our ratings work with wagering-style terms typical of the group; for example the Luxury Casino welcome package is described with 60× terms. Treat any multiple as a distance to cover: a larger multiple means more total stakes before withdrawal, and so more exposure to the house edge along the way.
A useful habit is to write the number out. Take a bonus amount, multiply by the stated requirement, and look at the total stakes. If the figure is bigger than what you would ever play, the offer is not built for you, however attractive the banner.
Game weighting: not every bet counts equally
Terms usually list how much each game type contributes to wagering. Slots often count in full, while table games, live games or video poker may count for less or not at all. The reason is the return: games that give back more over the long run are weighted lower so that the requirement is not trivial to clear.
This is where payout rate and bonus rules collide. The games with the best published returns, such as video poker at up to 99.9% for the full-pay version, are exactly the ones that are commonly weighted down or excluded. A slot at 96%+ clears wagering faster in the terms than a higher-returning game does.
Read the weighting table, not just the headline. If your favourite game is not listed, assume it does not count until the casino says otherwise.
Time limits
A bonus normally comes with a window in which the requirement must be met. When the window ends, the bonus and any winnings from it can be removed. The window may begin when you accept, when you deposit or when you make your first bet; the wording differs, so find the moment it starts.
We do not quote specific day counts for any brand here, because they change and the live terms are the authoritative source. What we can say is how to use the information: divide the total stakes you calculated by the days available and ask whether that is a pace you would play anyway. If it feels like work, decline the bonus.
Maximum bet while wagering
Most offers cap your stake per spin or hand while the requirement is open. Exceeding the cap, even once and even by accident, can allow the casino to void the bonus winnings. Because the cap is often shown in a small-print section, it is the term most often missed.
Two practical points. First, set your bet size before starting and lock it, so that a mis-tap does not breach the limit. Second, check whether the cap applies to every game or only to some. Table limits can interact with this: if the cap is below a table's minimum, that table is simply closed to you while wagering is open.
Caps on winnings and what withdrawal really means
Some offers limit how much you can withdraw from bonus winnings. The cap may be a fixed figure or a multiple of the bonus. When one is present, the practical value of the bonus is the cap, not the amount shown on the banner.
That feeds straight into the question of what you can actually withdraw. A bonus can be worth less than the number on the page because of wagering, weighting, the stake cap, time limits and the winnings cap together. It can still be worth taking, particularly when the first step is small, such as the $1 entry at Casino Classic and Zodiac Casino, but you should know the figure before you accept.
Payout speed is a separate matter. Once you meet the terms, a withdrawal goes through a request, a review and the payment method's own processing. How quickly depends on the method and the casino; we do not publish timings we cannot verify.
Doing this on a phone
On a phone the terms are usually behind a link or a collapsed panel, and the accept button sits above it. Open the terms before you tap accept. Scroll to the bottom, because the cap and the exclusions are often the last lines.
Account checks matter more than people think. If the casino asks you to confirm your details before a withdrawal, doing it early in the account area means a smoother request later. Smooth verification is quicker when the name and payment details match, and it works the same on a phone as on a computer.
If the terms are too hard to read on a small screen, use a larger one once. It is better to spend five minutes reading than to find out after you have wagered.
A worked example with made-up numbers
Say an imaginary offer gives a $100 bonus with a 30× requirement on the bonus alone. The total stakes needed are $3,000. If a spin costs $1, that is three thousand spins before the money can leave. Now suppose the offer applied the same multiple to bonus plus deposit: the total would be $6,000, twice as far. The banner would look identical.
Add game weighting. If only half of your stakes count on the game you prefer, the effective distance doubles again. Add a stake cap and a seven-day window, and the offer might only suit a very particular style of play. None of these figures belongs to a real brand; they only show how the terms multiply.
The point of the exercise is to replace a feeling with arithmetic. Do the same sum with the real numbers from the terms page you are about to accept, and the decision usually makes itself.
Welcome packages are staged, so the terms are staged too
Several brands on this site split their welcome offer across steps. Luxury Casino spreads up to $1,000 over five deposits, Golden Tiger Casino up to $1,500, and Captain Cooks Casino up to $500 in value over five steps. Each deposit can carry its own match and, in principle, its own conditions.
Read the terms for each step, not only the first. A friendly first step can be followed by a second whose conditions differ, and you decide again each time whether to accept. Declining one step does not obligate you to take the next.
A five-line checklist
Before you accept: what does the wagering multiple apply to, which games count and how much, how long do you have, what is the maximum bet and is there a winnings cap. If you can answer all five in your own words, you are ready. If not, play without the bonus.
Our ratings explain how bonus terms feed into scores on the how we rate page, and the RTP guide covers the return side. You must be 18+ (or the age required in your province) to play.
